OKRs (Objectives and Key Results)

by Library Staff Operations

Definition

OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) is a collaborative goal-setting protocol for companies, teams, and individuals. It consists of an Objective (a clearly defined goal) and 3-5 Key Results (specific measures used to track the achievement of that goal).

Origin

The framework was popularized by Andy Grove at Intel in the 1970s and later introduced to Google by John Doerr.

When to use

  • Driving alignment across a large organization.
  • Setting ambitious, “stretch” goals.
  • Improving transparency and focus within a team.

How to apply (Steps)

  1. Define Objectives: What do we want to achieve? (Qualitative, inspirational, time-bound).
  2. Define Key Results: How will we know if we achieved it? (Quantitative, measurable, verifiable).
  3. Review: Track progress weekly or monthly.
  4. Grade: At the end of the quarter, grade the KRs (usually 0.0 to 1.0).
